The Toy Fox Terrier is a true American breed. These dogs originated by crossing small Smooth Fox Terriers with several toy breeds including the Chihuahua and Manchester Terrier. This dog has great strength and stamina for its size and is also known for its athletic appearance, as well as ability. The Toy Fox Terrier, also known as the AmerToy or the American Toy Terrier, are so small they can be carried in one arm. Toy Fox Terriers remain playful most of their lives. Their comical antics can entertain you for hours, as they were once used as circus dogs. Toy Fox Terriers are bold and curious, exhibiting their intelligence with easy training. Despite their diminished size they are courageous and are not intimidated by other pets. They do accept other dogs, however, and get along with children who are not rough with them. Toy Fox Terriers make a wonderful indoor companion, obtaining most of their exercise from run of the house.
The Toy Fox Terrier originates from England and was bred originally for hunting small vermin and as a lap dog. It’s origins can be dated back to the 1800’s. The Toy Fox Terrier is also known by the other names of American Toy Terrier and AmerToy. The Toy Fox Terrier was first Registered by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 2001.
Temperament: A sensitive, loving, loyal, and affectionate breed, the Toy Fox Terrier is a spirited companion. Due to their stature they do best in a home with older considerate children. They thrive on attention and stimulation. This breed will get along with dogs, cats, and other household pets they have been raised with. They may have a tendency to display aggression to same gender dogs and will fight if provoked or threatened. The Toy Fox Terrier is exceedingly animated, comical, fun loving, and entertaining.
The toy fox terrier requires only minimal maintenance to its smooth, short coat. As a light shedder, this terrier needs only an occasional brushing and bath. Its toenails should be trimmed as needed. This breed makes a great house pet and can be happy in a large house or a smaller apartment. It is not an outdoor dog and may require a sweater in colder weather. The toy fox terrier has a high energy level and tends to exercise itself, so little exercising is required of its owner.
Care should be taken to select a responsible breeder, for like all small breeds, the Toy Fox Terrier can be exploited by puppy mills and backyard breeders. Puppies purchased from pet stores can have the same temperament and health problems as any other breed purchased from this source.
