Description:

Known for their intelligence and loyalty American Pit Bull Terriers make excellent, loving and protective companions despite the unfair press they receive. A common question regarding the APBT is, “How is this breed different from the American Staffordshire Terrier?. Some AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terriers are dual-registered as American Pit Bull Terriers with the UKC; however, this draws criticism from many who point out that the bloodlines have been separate for too long for these to be considered the same breed.

Just a few pit bull breeders have changed the images of this good natured dog. Breeders that still indulge in dog fighting or promote the aggressive behavior in the pit bull for illegal purposes have caused the slander of all pit bulls. Because these dogs can be trained to guard and protect, they are famous for drug dealers who use them to guard their drug supplies and money. The pit bull has been used in such illegal activities that they have gotten a bad rap overall.

The pit bull terrier is a breed which knows no fear, bred for bull-baiting and fighting with other dogs. For this reason it is banned completely or restricted in some countries. The result of the pit bull terrier was a cross between staffordshire bull terriers, bulldogs and other fighting dogs. Only very experienced owners should consider and handle this breed along with providing extensive socialisation from a young age (anywhere from 6-8 weeks up to adult and continuing the socialisation) to lessen it’s agression.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium-sized dog, solidly built, with a short coat and smooth, well-defined muscle structure. The dog’s appearance is powerful and athletic without being bulky or muscle bound. The length of the front leg is approximately half of the dog’s height at the highest part of the back. The American Pit Bull Terrier’s weight is roughly between 35 and 65 pounds. The dog’s head is in proportion to the rest of its body with a triangular shape, a broad, flat skull and a wide, deep muzzle. The eyes are set well apart, sit low on the skull, and are round to almond shaped.

Temperament:  This breed is extremely loyal, deeply devoted, affectionate, intelligent, and good-natured. The American Pit Bull Terrier does best in a home with older considerate children. They will get along with other dogs they have been raised with but may exhibit aggression toward strange dogs and other small household pets. They are exceedingly protective of their family, home, and territory. American Pit Bull Terriers are not generally used for guarding due to their friendly nature. Aggressive behavior toward humans is an uncharacteristic trait in this breed. They are not recommended for the novice, apathetic, or sedentary owner.
