Japanese Chin Dog Breeds
The Japanese Chin is sometimes called the Japanese Spaniel and is from the same family tree as the Tibetan Spaniel, the Pug and the Pekinese dog breeds. The lively and entertaining Chin is a toy-sized breed with a short and very wide muzzle. The Chin’s large eyes are set quite wide apart and it almost has an Oriental appearance.
The origin of the Japanese Chin is obviously that of Japan. They were very popular in the Japanese court and were only allowed to be owned by the royal family. You will find they were extremely popular in the nineteenth century and became the national symbol of Japan in 1964. If you are a little confused by the name you should know in history they were actually known as the Japanese Spaniel. This dog is intelligent, happy, and affectionate.
Japanese Chin dog have the classic look of an Oriental breed with a large, broad head; large, wide-set eyes; and a flattish face. Small, V-shaped ears hang down, set just below the top of the head. They carry their plumed tail jauntily over their back.They have an abundant coat, but looks are deceiving. The Chin is a wash-and-go breed and needs little more than a weekly brushing to maintain his elegant appearance
Japanese Chin Appearance: The Japanese Chin is a beautiful, long-coated toy breed, measuring approximately 12 inches at the shoulder. It carries it’s majestic tail over it’s back, displaying long plumes of silky hair. The Japanese Chin dog has a long, straight, silky coat that comes in colors of black and white or red. Grooming requirements are fairly demanding - the coat should be brushed and combed daily, and the large, rather prominent eyes need regular examination and cleansing.
Temperment: The Japanese Chin is a good companion, bright and alert. He is sensitive, though, with definite likes and dislikes, but rarely, if ever, does he forget friend or foe. He is an intelligent dog whose only purpose is to serve man as a companion. Responsive and affectionate with those it knows and loves but reserved with strangers or in new situations.
