The Bull Terrier does not require much grooming, and an occasional brushing with a rubber brush should be sufficient. Hand plucking may be necessary for dead hairs, but is usually cared for with a brush or comb. This breed is an average shedder, shedding only around twice a year. Removing loose hair should be simple when using a special rubber glove designed for such a task. Ear cleaning is necessary to prevent any difficulties in the future. This dog requires an experienced handler as they can become dominant without the right training and socialization. The Bull Terrier is a very polite breed that is naturally obedient, however does need extensive training and requires a great deal of companionship.

The Boston Bull Terrier Dog is a very lively, gentle, very intelligent and well mannered dog. Due to its refined and pleasant personality, it is sometimes referred to as the “American Gentleman”. Their intelligence makes sure that they learn things fast but sometimes can be a bit willful. It is most reliable and excellent with children and bonds to the whole family, and is especially good with elderly people and also very friendly with strangers. This dog breed is an excellent companion and generally gets along well with non-canine pets.

When grooming, it is important not to forget about your Pit Bull’s ears. They should be checked at every grooming session for dirt, or any signs of infection or parasites. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend a good ear wash that is safe for your Pit Bull. Don’t try to clean inside his ear canal, as you may damage his hearing. If you see any signs of infection or parasites, or anything that is concerning, call your veterinarian for an appointment. Ear infections can be very painful and annoying for your Pit Bull.

His ancestors were brought to the Unites States in the mid - 1800’s by Boston-Irish immigrants. Originally bred from a variety of bulldogs and terriers, American breeders increased his weight and gave him a more powerful head. A forbearer to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they were originally bred to be a fighting dog. Bull baiting was banned in England in 1835 and these dogs are no longer been bred to fights. There is some complication in registries of this breed. The AKC considers the American Staffordshire Terrier as separate and distinct from the American Pit Bull Terrier, yet the UKC will register both as American Pit Bull Terriers.

Bull Terrier dogs are thick-set, muscular, well proportioned animals with a short, dense coat that comes in black brindle, red, fawn, tri-color and pure white.  Their most distinctive feature is the head, which is almost flat on the top sloping evenly down to the nose with no stop.  These dogs are courageous, scrappy, fun-loving, active, clownish and fearless.  They thrive on affection and make a fine family pet but do not tolerate teasing, so children should be taught to respect them.  These loyal and polite dogs need lots of exercise and can be somewhat difficult to train.  The standard size weighs 45 to 60 lbs. and stands 21-22″ at the shoulders.
